Trees
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Importance of Trees

Trees are the world’s single largest source of breathable oxygen. They are under threat, which means we are under threat. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, the world has lost 80% of our original forests in the last decade. We need to start a culture of planting and replacing trees now. Trees give us much-needed oxygen and sequester carbon dioxide, increase biodiversity, fix nitrates into soil making it more fertile to grow other plants, fruits & veggies, urban tree planting improves pride, provides healthy and beautiful places for children to play and learn and improve water quality.

“To make up for the world’s loss of trees in the past decade, we need to plant about 14 billion trees every year for 10 years in a row.  In South Africa, we need to plant trees as we are part of the global problem. We also need to address disparity – there is a huge divide between ‘leafy’ privileged and ‘barren’ under-privileged areas. Without a culture of planting trees in under-greened areas, environmental and social challenges are exacerbated."  http://www.greenpop.org/
